Winter's Chill (Download)

Winter's Chill (Download)

Steve Green, Greg Nelson

I started writing this one while David and I were visiting our brother Randy, in his home, a short time before he passed into Jesus’ presence. A couple of days later, our dear friend, Bill Werner, passed away suddenly. Christmas cheer seemed out of place with such loss. Yet not really. The Christmas account in the Bible is filled with the harsh realities of life in this poor, fallen world, but also of the Savior who entered our darkness to bring us into His light.

A glowing Christmas tree alight
The flicker of a flame
Feel strangely hollow on this night
As sorrow stakes its claim
Death has come to steal once more
And take life’s breath away
Let’s sit a while and grieve the wrong
Lamenting with a song
We knew this day would come
But never thought it’d be this soon
We’re shaken by the sudden loss
And numbed by the news
In a moment life is gone
Our frailty feels more near
As Silent Night drifts soft and long
It mingles with our tears
Yet even in the chill of winter
Hope will not be lost
Death has been defeated by the cross
The Child of Bethlehem was born
The reign of darkness fell
Now in our deepest valley God’s with us
Emmanuel
So in the quiet, lonely hours
When strength is almost gone
Recall God’s gift of steadfast friends
Whose love we lean upon
